The Ram Lila of Tulsighat , Benaras, is reputed to have been enacted every year on the streets of Banaras since the 17th Century when its founder, Tulsidas, the author of the "Ramcharitmanas" first wrote and directed it.

The Ram Lila enacts the different episodes in the life of Rama over a period of 21 nights - playing each incident in different 'mohallas' or neighborhoods in the ancient city of Banaras.

Every night it has an audience numbering several hundreds. This film follows the enactment of the main episodes of the story,, interviews the leading participants, and examines the notion of theatre as ceremony; theatre as pilgrimage; theatre as worship.
